Precious Metals IRA

Real metal inside a retirement account

A precious metals IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical bullion — gold, silver, platinum and palladium — instead of (or alongside) paper assets. The account is administered by an IRS-approved custodian, and the metal itself is stored in an approved depository vault, never at home.

For savers who already hold physical metal — or who like the idea of a tangible asset inside a tax-advantaged account — it can be a way to keep the two worlds under one plan.

The process

Three steps, in order

1

Open a self-directed IRA

Choose an IRS-approved custodian that handles precious metals and open a self-directed IRA with them. The custodian administers the account and its reporting.

2

Fund the account

Fund it with a contribution, a transfer, or a rollover from an existing retirement account, following your custodian's instructions and the IRS rules that apply to you.

3

Choose approved metals

Direct the custodian to buy IRS-approved bullion — like much of what we sell — and it ships to an approved depository, where it is stored in your IRA's name.

Eligibility, in general

What the IRS allows

Stated as general standards — your custodian confirms eligibility for any specific product before purchase.

Minimum fineness

As a general IRS standard, IRA metals must meet minimum purity: gold .995+, silver .999+, platinum .9995+ and palladium .9995+ fine. A well-known exception is the American Gold Eagle: it is IRA-eligible at .9167 (22-karat) fineness because the law names it specifically.

Coins and bars both qualify

Government-mint bullion coins and bars from accredited refiners are the usual choices. Collectible and numismatic coins are generally not eligible — if an item's price is about rarity rather than metal content, it doesn't belong in an IRA.

Storage is not optional

IRA metals must be held by the custodian at an approved depository. Taking personal possession of your IRA's metal — including "home storage" arrangements — can be treated as a distribution, with taxes and penalties. Keep it in the vault.

Where BullionCages fits

We supply the bullion. Tell us the order is for an IRA and we'll coordinate shipment to your custodian's depository and confirm the products meet their eligibility list before anything is finalized.
